About Us

Our Story

Driven by a passion for exceptional advocacy, our founding members, Gopal Sreenevasan and Leong Phaik Leng, believe that lawyers do their best work when they are not bogged down by administrative and operational tasks.

Inspired by the barristers’ chambers model in the UK, the duo began to develop a vision: what would a barristers’ chambers look like in Malaysia, and what would it mean to offer a practice that puts advocacy at the very heart of its existence?

Thus, Endeavour GLP emerged as a groundbreaking chambers model in Malaysia, providing lawyers with a cutting-edge platform to cultivate their advocacy and drafting skills, free from the labours of managing a legal practice.

Who We Are

At Endeavour Group Law Practice, advocacy is the core of our practice.

Our founding members possess a keen understanding of complex commercial disputes, honed over 20 years of practice. Their expertise extends across all levels of Malaysian courts as well as regional and domestic commercial arbitration.

Operating under the chambers model, our practice is dedicated exclusively to delivering expert advocacy services, receiving instructions solely from solicitors. This approach allows us to dedicate all our time and expertise to the analysis, scholarship, strategy, and execution of effective advocacy on the client’s behalf. Our advocates are also frequently sought after to provide expert opinions and advisory services to solicitors and clients.

Unlike traditional law firms, members of our chambers maintain individual, independent practices. This model ensures freedom from conflicts of interest, allowing our advocates to engage in cases that align with their skills and interests.

Barristers’ Chambers

Origin

Barristers, also known as advocates, work from the barristers’ chambers. The chambers model originated in the mediaeval English Inns of Court, which emphasises the barrister’s independence as a sole practitioner. As an advocate, the role primarily focuses on written and oral advocacy. Advocates specialise in court work and are conventionally not involved in client handling.

Structure

Barristers work alone but share office space and support costs (clerks and resources).

Scope of service

Retained for specific cases, primarily as barristers representing litigants in court or acting in arbitration as either counsel or arbitrator.

Duties

Barristers provide legal advice, research cases, prepare documents, and advocate for clients in court. They also cross-examine witnesses, analyse evidence, and negotiate settlements. Barristers are conventionally not contacted directly by the client, and work alongside solicitor firms in disputes. Not having a deep relationship with the client allows barristers to provide objective advice to the client.

Remuneration

Income is tied to the work they generate or handle, fostering a directly merit-based model.

Flexibility

Have more control over their work schedules and the cases they accept.

Law Firms

Origin

The “Cravath System,” introduced by the New York law firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore in the early 1900s, established the hierarchical law firm model, with partners overseeing associates. In Malaysia, the fused profession integrates the roles of an advocate and solicitor. This allows legal practitioners to perform both advisory work as solicitors, as well as represent clients in court and alternative dispute resolution mediums.

Structure

Based on a partnership structure with a limited number of equity partners served by many associates (salaried employees).

Scope of service

Law firms offer a wider range of legal services, including that of solicitors and barristers.

Duties

Solicitors offer legal advice to clients, often as the first point of contact. They practise in various areas in both advisory and disputes work, and maintain direct contact with clients on their respective briefs. They are also deeply involved in client management and attend to all administrative matters relating to the briefs.

Remuneration

A combination of firm profit-sharing, salary, and individual billable hours.

Flexibility

May have less autonomy over their work and caseload, depending on the firm structure.
